Frenchteam has started again his training camps of the winter period. After having gone to Jura and Mulhouse, we were this week-end in Clermont-Ferrand, using maps of the world cup of the last year.
First we came to Volvic, and ran 4 loops : 2 with a classic map and 2 others with a contour map. The small scall allowed us to correctly enter the map and the terrain even if it didn't avoid us to make some mistakes.
On the afternoon, we went on the qualification map of the middle distance of the world cup.
4 exercices waited for us for a total of about 10km.
To conclude this saturday, we had the traditionnal meeting of pre-season with the coaches in order to set the goals and the way to reach those goals for the next season.
The real challenge was on sunday with a long distance mass start with forking. We expected a tough race with most of the controls in the middle of the volcanic(so green and rocky) terrain. To understand the course, here is the explanation : on the first loop, runners had to choose between blue and red controls(the first who punched choosed the color and shouted it to be hear by the next one and after runners went alternatively on blue or red). On the second loop they took the dotted lines and the other color.
Best time was done bye JB Bourrin with 2:04(but I'm generous because he didn't find one control...). After came a group of 3 in 2:08(Thierry made only one loop because he had very serious breath problems, and perhaps his life is in danger... :-D )

The 2nd Orient Show in Villeneuve d'Ascq (Lille) took place this week end and some O'Zone runners competed in the same area than last year : Charlotte Bouchet, Anaïs Goffre, Capucine Vercellotti, Charly Boichut and Simon Leroy.
In the women's competition, Capucine won despite a very fast finish of Pippa Whitehouse (GBR). Anaïs took the 3rd place and Charlotte was out in semi final
In the men's competition, 88 runners were fighting for the win.
Thierry Gueorgiou had no serious challenger during the qualifying heats (4 victories/4 heats) , the 1/4 finals and the 1/2 final, but a very fast François Gonon in the end was breezing in the back of Thierry until last control. But he could not beat Thierry. Thibaut Magne ended 3rd and Charly took a good 4th place. Simon was ejected in semi final with a 4th position in his heat (only 2 went to final).
In the relay competition, a flemish belgian team won after a really close competition.
More informations, maps and results will be on www.orient-show.info , probably soon.
---------------

Aujourd’hui moyenne distance :
Phil : 15h07
Damien : 15h21
Tero : 15h29
Mélanie : 15h58
Amélie : 16h02
Céline : 16h13
Congratulations from all the OZone's members to Lucas Basset for his 2 medals in sprint (3rd) and long(1st) and Théo Fleurent for his bronze medal in long. Other french significant results have been done by the junior squad. Just well done everybody!
Good luck for those who go to the JWOC, and for all the youg french orienteers, train harder and harder in order to be abble to take places of our (old :-) ) seniors.

Under a quite scary sky, this afternoon began with a football match in Planfoy , some kilometers higher than St Etienne.
Then because of the bad weather we moved to Le Bessat ,a really famous ski station,:)
And organised a "tournoi de pétanque" , that i don't know the words in english.
The winners was the team : Pole france president: Alain Brunerie with his two teammates Amélie Chataing and Thierry Gueorgiou.

Capucine Vercellotti (on the right on the picture) and her teammates won this afternoon the famous swedish relay Tiomila! Capucine ran the second leg , starting in 7th position 1min44 behind the leaders and finishing in 10th position 2min20 behind
It's the first time than a French orienteer wins a big relay with his Scandinavian club ! Some other OZone girls were competing, with mainly good results for Amélie Chataing (14th with IF Thor 1, 2nd leg) , Mélanie D'Harreville (79th with OK Denseln 1, 4th leg) and Anaïs Goffre (165th with IF Thor 2, 1st leg)
Tonight, Ozone will have another chance to perform, in the men's category, with Philippe Adamski running the 9th leg, transmitting to his teammate Thierry Gueorgiou for Kalevan Rasti
3 other Ozone runners will run this night : Alban Dalberto for NTNUI and Vicent Coupat and Yoann Garde for Nyköpings OK.
----------------

Long Distance.
H21 : 10,7km, 31c, 600m up.
Start List : Jo Tinchant, Vinc’ Coupat, Charly Boich’, François Gonon, Sim Leroy, Phil Adamski (3’ intervall).
The first leg was very interesting. The choice a little at the left wasn’t good, because of climbing. The choice all at the left, flat, by the road, was maybe the best, but the right one seems good also. Personnally, I prefered the left one, making the second time.
I caught Vinc’ just before the 4. We made a mistake (1’) together at the 5, quite surprising because we attacked by path curve just above.
6th was typical of this terrain, in the rocky areas. The big boulder (on the circle, N-E) help us to simplify in this « confuse » area.
We made an other mistake to the 7, going too high and too much on the left. But the re-entrant help us to loose less than 1’.
François catch up us before the 8. The speed increased behind him for the 2 little loops. We caught Jo at the 11. As François was faster, we had to let him go, seeing him away, but controling our way 100m behind.
A very good downing to the 16 made me take 20sec to the others. So I punched this with François, and without Jo and Vinc’.
François, so fast went away again. I was alone. And I made a mistake to the 19 (45sec), because I didn’t want to go through the green. But the length by the white (right side) was too long.
I continued with an other mistake to the 20, going too high by the water channel. So the 2 others came again from behind.
3 together, we were very fast for 21th and 22th. But the climb to the 23 was too much for our leg in this beginnig of the winter preparation. We lost 2’30 compared to François, only physically.
The end was very nice, we had to managed this fine controls with the tiredness. We managed it quite good, but lost 15sec at (almost) each control, very closed to it (5-10 meters !), because we were too tired to read precisely our map and description while running. But we were happy to finish by a downhill, a too avoid a big mistake, for exemple at the 30 where there is not so much detail to attack the control.
This first long distance training was not so long, but the rocky ground and the climbing made it tough. I will need some few days to recover !

Sprint :
The sprint race opened the winter week-end trainings. It took place totally in streets of a quite old town of the « Haute-Loire » (50 km west of St Etienne). There is a big density of roads and paths combined with underpass and steps. Thus the race was hard, you needed to stay focused all the race not to lose important seconds by taking the wrong way. In fact the difficulty wasn't mainly to find the fastest route choices, but to follow the planed route choice. The contours are not printed on the map but the north side is upper by about 75m climbing. It is almost impossible to read the map in the very sloping downhill, and still more in the steps. It reduced the map reading time and with the tiredness it could have lead to mistakes, sometimes long...
It was the same race for women and men and juniors and seniors.
Result : ( there were some problems at the finnished due to canceled controls for some runners who didn't understand the consigns, as me...)

Léa Vercellotti : 19'16 18'11

Middle distance and night course :
Contrary to the sprint and the long distance, the medium and the night races were not « objective races ». It is a new concept in the french winter training. 2 races are choosen to be the goals of the week-end (here the sprint and the long).
It means we have to totally give our best on those races. On the others we can physicaly relax and simply work our own technic. Up to now we did all the races as faster as we could, and I guess we couldn'be totally focused on every sessions.
For the second time of January, French runners came to the south of France to train on mediterranean terrain. Sun and heat were with us, and it was very pleasant to run with such conditions.
And the program? Saturday was planned a sprint, a middle and a night race. On sunday a tranemo was waiting for us.
Let's back on the Sprint. Organised in a typical old mediterranean village named Montbrun les Bains, it was a very hard race. The map was difficult to read due to a lots of walls, and route choices were hard to see, because we had to do big detours. Moreover, there were some slope wich put you in red zone and it was thus more difficult to read correctly the right way. Thierry won the race with a time of 16'07.
Middle distance was a test for the training camp in Spain. Terrain was mostly open, with a lot of sandy and mudy gullys(ravines).
Night race was on the same map as the middle.
The race of sunday was a tranemo. It's a long distance with forking. On the first turn, you have to take the full line and on some controls (as the 2nd), you choosed blue or red loop. The runner following you has to choose the other color. Consequently it mix and separate the groups. On the second turn you have a smaller course because you take the dotted line, and you have to choose the color you didn't take at the first turn.
There were a lot of climb on the race. It went difficult to run in every especially at the end. Thierry had a strong start and nobody could stay behind him. Finally he finished in 1h30, 6 min in front of François Gonon and 9 min in front of Philippe Adamski.

Week end ski tour ( 26 au 28 janvier 2007)
Le bessat
Week end à dijon annulé , chute de poudreuse à st étienne ! ! C’est parti pour un long ( très long pour certains) week end de ski ! !

Let's begin with the long distance. The race was a test for the junior and senior team. We ran it on Saturday afternoon with a nice and sunny weather. Camelback and energy gels were required to dominate the 14km and the 650m of climbing for the M21. To give you an idea, Thierry Gueorgiou ran it in a very strong 93min... The others could just see him catch and pass them. 2 butterflys allowed to dispatch the runners. One note : on the 19th controls, the best route choice was straight by a mere 1 min compared to the route choice using the road.
After such a race, it was difficult to take part to the night training on the evening, but it is also pleasant to run by night on an open area with a starry sky.
On Sunday morning was organised 2 sprints and one other training(long choices mixed with closed controls).
Here are my route on the sprints.
Splits showed that for the 1st control it was faster to take by the south of the field. Attack was easier and there was a good runnability until the slope below the control. I did a mistake of 20" on the 4th. It was certainly better to take directly the field by leaving the 6th but I was attracted by the deep stream.
Legs were very heavy after the first sprint and the hard saturday. I had a big lack of power on the muddy(yes even if the sun shined, the earth was wet in some place) and sandy ground.
I lost time(around 20") on the 6th control because I choosed a bad route and I had to climb to much. It was in fact better to go almost straight. On the 7th I took on the right not to have to cross deep and unrunnable reentrant. Attack was safer and on the end of the race it could have been a smart decision to avoid big mistake.
To finish for this week-end, the coach planned a training on a new map. There were just a few runners who completed this whole course.
note : I drew one choice in blue wich Thierry took and seems to be the fastest even if the attack is not easy at all.
